Sunlight as Medicine — The Benefits of Safe Sun Exposure

In a culture that often fears the sun, we’ve forgotten that it’s not just a source of light—it’s a source of life. While too much sun without protection can be harmful, too little sun exposure comes with its own risks. In fact, moderate, mindful time in the sun can be one of the most powerful tools in your wellness toolkit. Sunlight plays a critical role in mood regulation, hormone balance, immune function, and perhaps most famously, vitamin D production.

Vitamin D is often called the “sunshine vitamin” because our bodies synthesize it when our skin is exposed to ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. This essential nutrient supports bone health, boosts immunity, reduces inflammation, and even plays a role in protecting against certain chronic diseases. Yet, due to indoor lifestyles, sunscreen overuse, and long winters, vitamin D deficiency is increasingly common—especially in northern climates.

But the benefits of sunlight go beyond just vitamin D. Sun exposure triggers the release of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that supports mood, focus, and calmness. That’s one reason people often feel happier on sunny days and why light therapy is used to treat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Regular time in natural light also helps regulate our circadian rhythm, making it easier to fall asleep at night and wake up feeling refreshed.

Of course, balance is key. Too much unprotected sun can increase the risk of skin damage and aging, but total avoidance isn’t the solution either. Aim for about 10–20 minutes of direct sun exposure to your arms, legs, or face a few times per week—ideally in the morning or late afternoon, when the rays are less intense. People with darker skin tones may need slightly more exposure to generate adequate vitamin D levels. And whenever you plan to be in the sun longer than this, be sure to apply sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

And remember, not all sun exposure requires baking at the beach. Gardening, walking, sipping tea on your porch, or even sitting by a sunny window can help your body reconnect with natural light cycles. When you’ll be outside for extended periods, use mineral-based sunscreens, hats, and light clothing to protect your skin without blocking the full spectrum of sunlight.

Sunlight is a natural, free, and potent form of medicine—when we treat it with respect. So step outside, lift your face to the sky, and let the light in. Your body and mind will thank you.

Susan Williams
